About the Artist

Bibliography

Born and educated in London, Graham attended Goldsmiths College of Art in 1960. He has since worked as a freelance illustrator and specialised in teaching life drawing on adult education courses. Since moving to Ireland in the 1980's, Graham has taken to painting full time, concerning himself mainly with the 'everyday' figure. Restaurants, markets, cafes, art galleries, musicians and rural life (he resides in the countryside) are his source of inspiration. Graham delights in capturing figures in relaxed and natural poses, those intimate little moments which all of us see, but rarely have time to absorb. However, his paintings are completed in studio where he can work out the best composition for his recordings. His technique favours the freshness of that first impression one gets as one views a scene for the first time. "I hate overworking and altering a painting too much." he admits.
Graham's ability and skills as a painter can be immediately appreciated. Whether it is a scene in rural France, flodded with light, the dramatic chiaroscuro of a stage lit musician or the restful half light of a dimly lit interior, Graham's brush can capture them all with equal confidence. His subject matter is broad. As with all good figurative painters, it is the honesty and simplicity of his subject matter that he strives to convey in his work.
Over the years, Graham has become ones of Ireland’s foremost figurative painters. Many of his shows and exhibitions have been virtual sell outs. His work has been exhibited at the prestigious Royal Hibernian Society and his work is collected widely by individuals, embassies and major corporations at home and abroad. Having made is final move last year, Graham now lives and works in Co. Monaghan
